31)“If I testify / on my own behalf,

만약 내가 증언한다면 / 내 자신을 위해서,

 

what I say / is not to be accepted / as real proof. 

내가 말하는 것은 / 받아들여지지 않을 것이다 / 참된 증거로

 

32)But there is someone else / who testifies on my behalf,

하지만 누군가가 따로 있다       / 나를 위하여 증언하는

 

and I know / that what he says / about me / is true.

나는 안다   / 그가 말하는 것은 / 나에 관하여 / 참인 줄

 

33)John is the one / to whom you sent your messengers,

요한이 그 사람이다  / 너희가 너희의 사자들을 보냈던,

 

and he spoke / on behalf of the truth. 

그는 말했다    / 진리의 편에서,

 

34)It is not that I must have a human witness;

내가 사람의 증언이 있어야 한다는 것이 아니다;

 

I say this only / in order that you may be saved.

나는 다만 이 말을 하는 것이다 / 너희가 구원을 받도록

 

35)John was like a lamp, / burning and shining,

요한은 등불과 같았다,      / 불타며 빛나는

 

and you were willing / for a while / to enjoy his light.

너희는 기꺼이 하였다  / 잠시 동안   / 그의 빛을 즐기는 것을

"Prayer"

Suppose one of you said / to a friend,

너희 중 하나가 말했다고 치자 / 한 친구에게,

 

"Friend, / Lend me three loaves,

"친구여, / 나에게 빵 세 덩어리만 빌려주게

 

A friend of mine has come to me / from the journey

내 친구 중 하나가 내게 왔는데      / 여행 중

 

and I have nothing / to set before him."

나는 아무것도 없다네 / 그에게 차려줄 게"

 

From inside / He shall answer / and say,

안쪽으로부터 / 그가 답하여      / 말하기를,

 

"Do not bother me.

"나를 괴롭히지 말게

 

The door has already been shut.

문은 이미 닫혀 있네

 

And my children are in bed.

내 아이들은 잠들어 있네

 

I cannot get up / and give you anything."

나는 일어나     / 자네에게 아무것도 줄 수 없네"라고

 

I tell you / even though he will not get up,

내가 너희에게 말하노니 / 그가 일어나서,

 

and give him anything / because he is his friend,

그에게 아무것도 주지 않을지라도 / 그가 그의 친구라고 해서,

 

yet because his persistence, / because of his shamelessness,

하지만 그의 집요함과,           / 그의 뻔뻔함 때문에

 

he will get up / and give him / as much as he needs.

그는 일어나서  / 그에게 줄 것이다 / 그가 필요한 만큼
